Pilates is named after its founder, Joseph Pilates. It was originally called Contrology, which is very indicative of the basis for Pilates training. Every movement is controlled. It is movement therapy for your mind and body with specific emphasis on the lumbar area, pelvic area and spine. The importance of the muscles in these areas expand to not only muscular development, but also spinal support, joint stability, bone stability, and even sexual health.

The first emphasis of Pilates is on the process itself. It recognizes the importance of doing an exercise correctly. The goal of Pilates’ movement training is meaningful and effective movement leading to a slimmer body, more acute mental focus and physical stamina, not bulky muscles.

There is a comparison between Pilates and yoga. Yoga is related more to meditation and is derived from Indian healing techniques. Both Pilates and yoga use mental visualization and controlled movements. Both can be used for rehabilitation purposes, with a focus on concentration and breathing. Pilates, though, is known for its universality. It does not matter who you are. It does not matter what your age is. It does not matter what your physical issues are. It does not matter if you are an athlete training for the Olympics or a stay-at-home parent. You can do Pilates, and Pilates can help you become a more complete, happier person.
